Committees

• The Committee exists and operates as per the Union 52 Benevolent Society Bylaws, Schedule 1.
• Provide financial assistance to members.
• Provide educational bursaries to dependents of participating, deceased or retired members.
• Provide financial support to members for continuing education related to union, labour or career development.
• Provide financial assistance to non-denominational charitable organizations and/or benevolent outreach programs.

• Provide an arms-length review of the ongoing financial records of the Union, ensuring that the best interests of the members are met.
• Report on the financial status of CSU 52 to the membership.

• Ensure that the CSU 52 Constitution & Bylaws (the “C&B”) and the Union 52 Benevolent Society Bylaws & Objectives are up to date and registered with the appropriate authorities.
• Research issues of importance and explore CSU 52 bylaws and policies about specific subjects, with the goal of identifying gaps and implications, and draft proposed revisions for consideration at the request of the Policy & Procedures sub-committee of the Board of Directors.
• Identify any conflict and/or implications to the C&B arising from notices of motions.
• Identify gaps between the C&B and the Policy & Procedures Manual.
• Advise the Union Membership at the April General Meeting of any conflicts and/or implications arising from the notice of motions, prior to the motions being voted on.
• The Committee's role is advisory in nature.

• Investigate all charges against member(s) as brought before the Union under Bylaws, Article 9 in order to arrive at a fair and impartial decision.

• Provide an arms-length review of the ongoing financial records of the Union, ensuring that the best interests of the members are met.
• Report on the financial status of CSU 52 to the membership.

• Hear and rule on appeals of grievances and classification challenges denied by the Labour Relations Officer(s), Director of Labour Relations and the President.
• Hear and rule on appeals of the decision of the Discipline Committee, as per Bylaws Article 7.

• To ensure the Collective Agreement, and labour and human rights are adhered to by observing and reporting on matters arising in the workplace.
• To represent the members in the work area by being aware, learned, a sounding board, and a communicator sharing information.
• To be the liaison with the members and the Union.
• To increase the knowledge, skill and proficiency of Shop Stewards and the Union Membership.

• Define the vision and mission for the Committee.
• Advise the Board of Directors on theories of change, defined objectives, and desired outcomes for CSU 52.
• Encourage and promote antiracism, dignity, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Identify issues and challenges experienced by BIPOC/minority members.
• Provide support to members experiencing racism and discrimination
• Build awareness of challenges and issues faced by BIPOC/minorities in the workplace and in the Union among the membership at large
• Increase Union participation among BIPOC/minority members
• Recommend to the Board actions and recommendations to address racism and discrimination

• Raise CSU 52's visibility in Edmonton, through involvement in public and community events.
• Increase member engagement within the Union by participation in public and community events.
• Involve the Union Membership in a fun and creative non-partisan manner to support social issues, such as multiculturalism, diversity, and equality.

• Build and maintain a library of educational content about the labour movement for the use of all CSU 52 committees.
• Build and maintain a library of historical information about the local labour movement and CSU 52 and the Benevolent Society in particular.
• Draft, in a creative manner (eg. social media content), educational opportunities to support social unionism issues, such as:
  • Multiculturalism
  • Diversity
  • Equality
  • Human rights
  • Social justice
  • Democracy

• Organize and promote social functions of the Union and to involve the Union Membership as volunteers when required.

• Build and foster relationships among the young workers of CSU 52 encouraging their involvement in the Union.

• Develop strategies for action and mobilize CSU 52 members employed by the City of Edmonton in support of a single wage scale for each classification.
• Advocate for the elimination of the City of Edmonton's practice of paying different hourly rates to employees in the same classification performing the same work.
• Support and complement collective bargaining and other union initiatives aimed at achieving one wage scale for City of Edmonton CSU 52 members.

• CSU 52 supports the Edmonton & District Labour Council (EDLC) goals to:
  • Secure legislation which will safeguard and promote the principles of free collective bargaining, the rights of workers, and the security and welfare of all people.
  • Extend the benefits of collective bargaining to all workers and promote the interests of our affiliates.
  • Protect and strengthen our democratic institutions. To secure full recognition and enjoyment of the rights and liberties to which we are justly entitled, and to preserve and perpetuate the cherished traditions of our democracy.
  • Safeguard the democratic character of the labour movement and respect the autonomy of each affiliated union.
