COE Bargaining Update #5
Posted on 11/14/2024
Three Things to Know
- Monetary Discussions Proposed: We proposed starting monetary discussions now, but the parties agreed to continue non-monetary discussions.
- Non-Monetary Items Discussed: Dispute Resolution Process, clarifying language for short- and long-term disability plans, and discipline language in the Collective Agreement.
- Next Bargaining Dates: November 19, 21 and 26, 2024.
Meeting Recap
Knowing that CUPE Local 30 has begun monetary discussions, we proposed starting monetary discussions at our November 6th meeting. Although the City expressed it was too early, citing their non-monetary progress with CUPE Local 30 that began in the summer and a preference to address wages later, we see this differently. We believe that beginning monetary talks now would not only align with Council’s budgeting process but also builds momentum to advance both monetary and non-monetary goals together. While we did agree to continue with non-monetary discussions, we emphasized that we are a different Union with distinct priorities and should not be held to the same monetary package if other Unions settle ahead of us.
We discussed multiple non-monetary proposals, including the Dispute Resolution Process, clarifying language for the short- and long-term disability plans and the discipline language in the Collective Agreement. We had good, interest-based discussions and a willingness from both parties to review some of the discussed items independently prior to the next days of bargaining.
What's Next
- Non-Monetary negotiations continue November 19, 21, and 26
- Advocating for a fair settlement: We remain cognizant of CSU 52 members' priorities and will continue to negotiate with this in mind, while also standing in solidarity with our Union siblings who are also at the bargaining table.
- Our next update will be provided after our bargaining session on November 26th
