  • Both the nominee and their nominators must be from the same work location

Acceptance of Nomination

All nominees will be asked if they accept or decline their nomination. If an election is required for a work location, one will be arranged.



  • Ensure the Collective Agreement, and labour and human rights are adhered to by observing and reporting on matters in the workplace;
  • Represent the members in the work area by being aware, learned, and a sounding board, and sharing information;
  • Be a liaison with the members and the Union;
  • Increase the knowledge, skill and proficiency of Shop Stewards and the Union Membership;
  • Follow the Terms of Reference of this Committee and the Policy & Procedures of the Union;
  • Distribute and post all written material received from the Union Office as required.

Although it is not mandatory for Shop Stewards to attend Union Meetings, it is highly encouraged to attend as many as possible to stay informed. Note, that attending Union Meetings is a prerequisite for being nominated to the Board of Directors. Meeting times vary but are usually in the evening starting at 5:30 p.m.

General Membership Meetings

Occur five times a year, on the 2nd Tuesday of every January, and the 1st Tuesday of every April, June, October, and December.

Shop Steward Assembly Meetings

Occur five times a year, on the 3rd Tuesday of every February, March, May, September, and November.

Contractual Unit Meetings

These meetings are hosted by your Contractual Unit Director (a Board of Directors position) and held at least twice a year.

A Shop Steward's yearly honorarium is determined using one of the following calculations:

Calculation 1

Maintained Shop Steward status for a full year (January to December) and
Attended at least 3 of 5 Shop Steward Training Sessions (Assembly Meetings) and at least 3 of 5 General Membership Meetings

= flat rate of $375 plus $75 per Shop Steward Assembly Meeting attended in 2023

Calculation 2

Maintained Shop Steward status for a full year (January to December) and
Does not meet the attendance criteria noted in the above Calculation 1

= flat rate of $175 plus $75 per Shop Steward Assembly Meeting attended in 2023

Calculation 3

Shop Steward status was less than a full calendar year (e.g. elected or resigned mid-year)

= $15 per month as a Shop Steward plus $75 per Shop Steward Assembly Meeting attended in 2023
